'Our Heritage in Praise' CD

Sunday mornings have been a traditional time for family and friends to gather at their churches and worship in music and praise. To celebrate this tradition singers and musicians from many Madison area churches have combined their talents to create a commemorative CD titled “Our Heritage in Praise”. On the CD are choirs from six churches, songs featuring an ecumenical choir with 117 singers from 10 churches and elementary schools plus recordings of the four historic ‘tracker action’ organs here in Madison.

Featured are several favorite hymns and anthems that have been sung in our churches for many years: Amazing Grace, In My Heart there Rings a Melody, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, God So Loved the World, Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, This Little Light of Mine and many more. A wide variety of choirs and organs and styles of music are sure to hold memories for everyone.

The CD will be released at a party / concert during the 200 Hour Bicentennial Celebration. It will be available for purchase at $10 from all of the participating churches, at the Lanier Gift Shop and possibly other Madison shops. It will also be available at many 200 Hour Party events, such as the ice cream social at Trinity United Methodist Church, the block party and the closing ceremony.

Participants in the recording include singers, musicians and choirs from Christ Episcopal, First Assembly of God, First Baptist, First Christian, Hanover United Methodist, Pope John XXIII Elementary School, Prince of Peace Catholic Parish, Resurrection Lutheran, Southwestern Elementary School and Trinity United Methodist. The entire project is conceived and directed by Larry Wickersham, Choir Director and Organist at Prince of Peace; sponsored by the Madison Ministerial Association and funded by Morgan Nay Funeral Centre. For nine consecutive years on the second Sunday after Easter the Ministerial Association has sponsored a Spring Choir Festival. This CD project is a compilation of many of the elements and music from previous Choir Festivals.

The four historic organs are found in St. Michael’s, St. John’s, First Baptist and Windle Auditorium. These instruments remain in their original configurations with only the addition of electric blowers to supply the air. They are known as fine examples of organ building from the time period. These organs were featured with much acclaim during a National Convention of the Organ Historic Society attracting many visitors to Madison.
